When the World Series ended, it left a GIANT (pardon the pun!) sports void in our home. We had spent three intense weeks glued to our TV screen (something that Yuens NEVER do) and watched the Giants defeat the Rangers in grand style.
The reason it left a vacuum is because we love hockey. More importantly.....we love the San Jose Sharks! Unfortunately, the rest of the state of Colorado does not share our affection for Los Tiburones, making it very hard to catch their games. When we lived in California, we had season tickets to the Sharks games. I knew all the players and their stats. I knew coaches, reporters and broadcasters. Then we moved to Colorado and gave up satellite TV.
Now we are out of Baseball Season.....and can't get the Sharks on regular TV. What is a Sharks' Hockey Family to do?
I tell you what I won't do! I won't resign a contract for satellite TV and then pay extortion prices for their Center Ice package. Not only will I not pay the money....but, if I get satellite TV....I will watch satellite TV. And I DON'T need that.
Queue Heavenly Choir: HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH!
My amazing husband found NHL Game Center, which is an internet service you can get and watch all kinds of hockey games. But even better.....IT'S CHEAP! We just pick our game, plug our computer into our TV and voila! We watch the Sharks spank the Kings! It is that simple!!!!!
So, of course, my main goal is to get some more friends on board so we can watch games together. Because watching sports is a more the merrier sort of activity! So, we invite our good friends (who shall remain nameless) over to watch the game. They sleep through the whole thing. They aren't hockey fans and don't have an interest. Which was fine....
Until last night, when they got free tickets to go to an Avalanche game. After one game, they are now DIE HARD Av fans. WHATEVER! Two days ago, they didn't even like hockey....now they can't root for the Sharks to save their lives. I bet they don't even know what the National Hockey Championship trophy is called. (don't Google it....you know who you are). I know they don't know who the Great One is! (seriously, if you know....I will know you Googled)
SO......I am now accepting new hockey friends! The only stipulation is you must root for the Sharks! And seriously, if you can tell me who this Hockey God is....you are in!
But if you need more of an excuse to get on the Hockey Bandwagon, let me give you 10 reasons to watch!
1. It is really TWO sports for the price of ONE! Hockey AND Boxing!!
2. There are really only two rules to know: Watch your stick and Don't Touch the Goalie.
3. I don't care who you are....you are already better looking than almost all the guys on the ice.
4. If you don't know who Drew Remenda is....you are missing a big slice of life.
5. Appeals to eclectic musical tastes....going between Heavy Metal in the face off circle to Organ music to rally the crowd.
6. When the players are naughty, they get put in the time-out box....reinforcing cause and effect disciplinary actions to your kids.
7. It is charitable. The league supports the vision impaired, by giving them jobs....as referees.
8. It is the only team sport that hires some guys solely for their ability to fight and not their actual expertise at playing the sport.
9. The players have really cool nicknames (usually because you can't pronounce their real names!).
10. It is just one more thing we took from Canada and made better. It is about World Domination, people!
The best definition I have found of Hockey, comes from Adam Young, of Owl City. While explaining what the sport is about to his grandmother he said,
"Hockey is the game used to interrupt ice rink fights."
That really sums up the game.
So, Wednesday night, Sharks vs. the Avs.....who's in?
Fear the Fin!

too funny-- love your reasons for watching hockey-- as I am a non- fan (gasp!)
hahaha! did you know (bet you didn't) that i grew up in newfoundland? i grew up around hockey, not football. love it! and you are right on target with your ten points - so funny!
And...#11... YOU look good in that teal blue!
Nice picture of Ricci, and hilarious post. We have season tickets for the entire season. We really want Catey and Joss to come do a workshop. If we sweeten the pot with Sharks tickets, do you think we can work something out?
That would be the one and only MIKE RICCI!!! I stopped watching hockey way back in the day when the Avalanche traded Mike to the Sharks>>>UGH I went into a deep depression! He was my favorite of all time and I am so happy to know you share a love for him also! You are too funny! I miss seeing you, hope you all are doing great
